PwC Management Consultant Interview: Questions & Process

PwC's consulting/advisory interview blends a game-based online assessment and a recorded video interview with live case and behavioral rounds. Behavioral questions are mapped to the 'PwC Professional' framework (whole leadership, technical capabilities, relationships), and cases lean practical — business problems, market sizing, and implementation — rather than ultra-rigorous MBB strategy puzzles.

The interview process

1. Application + online assessment game-based / numerical + behavioral assessment
Tests: cognitive and behavioral traits through interactive games and reasoning tasks
2. Recorded video interview asynchronous, timed prompts
Tests: motivation, communication, and behavioral answers recorded on camera
3. Case interview 30-45 min live
Tests: structuring a business problem, market sizing, and a clear, data-supported recommendation
4. Behavioral interview 30-45 min
Tests: the PwC Professional competencies — leadership, teamwork, business acumen, relationships
5. Final round / superday with leadership one or more interviews with senior staff or partners
Tests: executive presence, fit, and sometimes a second case or experience deep-dive

How to answer (worked examples)

A manufacturing client's margins are shrinking. How would you diagnose it?
Pause and structure first. Margin = price minus cost, so split the investigation: is it a revenue/pricing issue (volume, mix, discounting) or a cost issue (raw materials, labor, overhead)? Segment by product line or plant, state which driver you'd test first and why, ask for data, then conclude with a recommendation. PwC wants organized, MECE-style thinking that lands on an answer, not a textbook recital.
Estimate the US meal-kit delivery market size.
Build it top-down: US households (~130M), estimate the share that would realistically subscribe, average spend per order, and orders per year, then multiply. Say every assumption out loud, keep numbers round, and sanity-check the final figure. Transparent logic and clean arithmetic beat a precise number.
Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult situation.
STAR mapped to the PwC Professional: show whole leadership (taking initiative), relationships (bringing people along), and a result. Emphasize the specific actions you took and what you learned. Tie it back to how that's the kind of leadership PwC expects from consultants with clients.

What PwC looks for

FAQ

Are PwC cases as rigorous as MBB?

Generally more practical and implementation-flavored, especially in Advisory. You still need structure and quant, but cases lean toward real client problems rather than ultra-abstract strategy puzzles. Strategy& (PwC's strategy arm) runs more MBB-style cases.

What is the game-based assessment like?

Interactive games and reasoning tasks that measure cognitive and behavioral traits rather than 'right' answers. Stay consistent and responsive; there's less to 'study' than for a traditional aptitude test, but practicing reasoning helps.

What is the PwC Professional framework?

PwC's leadership model covering whole leadership, business acumen, technical capabilities, global acumen, and relationships. Behavioral questions map to it, so frame your stories around those themes.

Do I need a business major?

No. PwC hires across backgrounds for many consulting roles. Structured thinking, quantitative comfort, and communication matter more than your major — all improvable with practice cases.

How long is the process?

Typically a few weeks from application to final round, varying by office, service line, and recruiting cycle.
